IPTV Keeps Buffering? 9 Fixes That Actually Work
By Epix IPTV Team · Published · 4 min read
It always happens at the worst moment. Penalty kick, final round, last two minutes of overtime, and the picture freezes. If you're moving from cable to IPTV, buffering is probably the thing that worries you most. The good news: in our experience helping customers, the cause is usually something at home, and it's usually fixable in under ten minutes.
Here are the fixes we suggest, roughly in the order we'd try them.
1. Test your actual internet speed
Not the speed on your bill, the speed your TV actually gets. Open a speed test on the device you stream on (or as close to it as possible). For a smooth picture you want at least 15 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, per stream. If three people are watching at once, multiply that.
2. Restart everything (yes, really)
Unplug the router and the streaming device, wait 30 seconds, plug the router back in first, then the device. It sounds too simple, but routers that have been running for weeks get sluggish. This alone fixes a surprising number of "it was fine yesterday" problems.
3. Use a cable, or at least 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the number one cause of buffering we see. Walls, microwaves and the neighbours' networks all get in the way. If your TV is near the router, an Ethernet cable is the single best upgrade you can make. Firestick users can get a cheap Ethernet adapter. If a cable isn't possible, make sure the device is on the 5 GHz network, not 2.4 GHz.
4. Clear the app cache
Player apps store a lot of temporary data, especially the TV guide. On a Firestick, go to Settings, then Applications, then Manage Installed Applications, pick your player and choose Clear Cache. On Android TV the path is similar. Don't clear data unless you're happy to log in again.
5. Free up space on the device
Firesticks have very little storage. When it's nearly full, everything slows down, including streaming. Uninstall apps you never open. If the device feels slow even in the menus, this is often why.
6. Switch the video player
Most IPTV apps let you choose between a built-in player, ExoPlayer or VLC. If one channel keeps stuttering, try another player in the app settings. Different players handle streams differently, and the switch takes ten seconds. Our IPTV Smarters Pro guide shows where this setting lives.
7. Check whether your internet provider is slowing streams
Some internet providers slow down video traffic at busy times. A tell-tale sign: speed tests look fine, but streams buffer every evening around the same time. If that matches what you see, a reputable VPN can help, because it stops your provider from seeing what kind of traffic it is. Try it during the busy hours before deciding.
8. Lower the quality for now
Not every channel needs to be in 4K. If your connection is borderline, the FHD or HD version of a channel will play far more smoothly. You can always switch back once you've fixed the underlying issue.
9. Ask us to check the server
If you've tried all of the above and it still buffers, message us on WhatsApp at +212 7 82 47 51 92. Tell us your device, the channel and roughly what time it happened. We can check whether there's a problem on our side and move you to a different server if needed.
Quick checklist
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Buffers on every channel | Slow or unstable Wi-Fi | Ethernet cable or 5 GHz |
| Only buffers in the evening | Network congestion or ISP slowing | Test at different times, try a VPN |
| One channel stutters, others fine | Player compatibility | Switch player in app settings |
| Menus are slow too | Full storage or old cache | Clear cache, remove unused apps |
| Started suddenly yesterday | Router needs a reset | Restart router and device |
Is it the service or your setup?
Here's a fair way to find out: test during a big live event, on a wired connection, with the cache cleared. If it's smooth then, your setup is fine. Epix IPTV runs on load-balanced servers with anti-freeze technology, and if you haven't tried us yet, the 24-hour free trial is exactly for this kind of test. No card, no commitment, just watch the game and see.
